New HIV infections
Infections in adolescents and the youth form a big part of new infections every year.
Why does this matter?
It matters because we can change the statistics
60 percent of people in Africa are youth. Kenya has an estimated 35 million youth (under 35) out of a total 45 million people.
Adolescents and many youth lack knowledge or information about HIV and STDs.
Having multiple sexual partners increases the risk of HIV and the youth tend to have multiple sexual partners.
Not talking about it, DOES NOT make it go away or prevent them from thinking about intercourse or drugs.
Think of the number of lives we can improve by sharing the knowledge in every Kenyan household.
Talking about something, does not necessarily mean one will engage in it, but it helps prepare one better.
As we know life is very unpredictable and parents cannot be with their children all the time.
Why adolescents/youth ?
They consume alcohol and drugs which may affect their judgement
There are high rates of STDs among the youth and many of them are not even aware. Meaning they can infect each other unknowingly.STDs increase the risk of HIV and vice versa.
Low rates of condom use generally
They may have intercourse for monetary gains and can easily acquire HIV from older people, who may take advantage of them.
You can’t change their life circumstances and choices but you can arm them with knowledge
They are the future of our country.
It is scary to think what can happen if we do nothing.
